Supplier Input Process Output Customer (SIPOC) Map
SIPOC maps are used to quickly visualize the core steps of a process, identify what inputs are needed, who provides inputs, outputs produced, and who receives them. This tool is especially useful at the beginning of a project to define boundaries, understand process complexity, and align stakeholders.

Steps for Creating SIPOC Maps
- Define the Process BOUNDARIES so that only relevant information is captured.
- Outline the PROCESS in 5-7 steps. Keep it high level for simplicity and clarity.
- List OUTPUTS of the process steps. Outputs could be products, documents, or data.
- Identify the CUSTOMERS including internal departments, external customers, or specific roles.
- Identify what INPUTS are needed for each step. These could be materials, data, or essential information.
- Identify SUPPLIERS of the inputs. Suppliers can be external vendors or internal departments.
When to Use SIPOC Maps
- Before starting a process improvement project to define the current process and highlight areas for improvement.
- In early discussions with teams or stakeholders to provide a common understanding of the process and its key components.
- To prepare for more detailed mapping and analysis (e.g., flowcharts).
- When clarifying process roles to clearly define who supplies inputs and who receives outputs.
- To collaborate and align everyone on the scope and essential elements of the process.
